Target Audience Of Artist And Band

Lady Gaga has a huge fan base. She connects with them via online pages such as Facebook, Myspace,Twitter and her own website LadyGaga.com. Below are some screen grabs from her website and other pages.

Lady Gaga has often been referred to as the modern day Madonna. It is often discussed that Lady Gaga is the Madonna of the new generation. It is hard to pin point exactly what the demographic, socioeconomic and psychographic factors are for Lady Gaga as she has such a huge range of fans. When I looked though her web pages the comments that have been left are from people in their late teens to mid twenties. Lady Gaga has such a huge fan base that it is impossible to accuratly say who her target audience is. She is well known for her extravagant avant garde fashion and appears on a wide range of magazine covers.

I left a comment on one of Lady Gaga's fan pages on facebook to ask why everyone liked her and what they would like to see in our re-creation of one of her videos etc. Above is a print screen of the post I left on Lady Gaga's fan page.

Song choice

For our music video we chose Lady Gaga- Monster. We all really liked this song and agreed there are lots of different approaches to making our own music video for this song. When we first started looking at songs that we could use for our music video we weren't sure what artist or song to use. We then decided it would be a good idea to look at some popular artists at the moment and looked at some of Lady Gaga's music. We thought that she would be the perfect artist for our music video, as she always makes unusual videos with big costumes and lots of make up. Lady Gaga's videos are always link to the subject of her songs and we felt this would be a good oportunity to make a creative and unusual video.
Once we had decided on the artist we needed to look for a song to create a video for. We had a look through her recent album, and found the song Monster. All of us really liked this song and agreed that there are lots of different ways to approach making a video it. So we decided that Monster by Lady Gaga would be our song choice for this project.

Monster lyrics:

Don't call me Gaga
I've never seen one like that before
Don't look at me like that
You amaze me

He ate my heart, he a-a-ate my heart
(You little monster)
He ate my heart, he a-a-ate my heart out
(You amaze me)
He ate my heart, he a-a-ate my heart
He ate my heart, he a-a-ate my heart

Look at him, look at me,
That boy is bad, and honestly
He's a wolf in disguise
But I can't stop staring in those evil eyes

I asked my girlfriend if she'd seen you 'round before
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor, baby
We might've fucked not really sure, don't quite recall
But something tells me that I've seen him, yeah, before

That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster

He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)
He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)

He licked his lips, said to meGirl, you look good enough to eat
Put his arms around me
Said, "Boy, now get your paws right off me"

I asked my girlfriend if she'd seen you round before
She mumbled something while we got down on the floor, baby
We might've fucked not really sure, don't quite recall
But something tells me that I've seen him, yeah
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
That boy is a monster

He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)
He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)
He ate my heart, he ate my heart

Instead he's a monster in my bed
He ate my heart, he ate my heart
Instead he's a monster in my bed
I wanna just dance but he took me home instead
Uh oh, there was a monster in my bed
We French kissed on a subway train
He tore my clothes right off

He ate my heart then he ate my brain
(I love that girl, wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)

He ate my heart
(I love that girl)
He ate my heart
(Wanna talk to her, she's hot as hell)

That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster

That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(He ate my heart )
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(He ate my heart )
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster, m-m-m-monster
(Could I love him?)
That boy is a monster

Exploring music videos

Massive Attack- Unfinished Sympathy
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWmrfgj0MZI&ob=av3e
The narrative of this video is a woman who has a thought playing on her mind, something she is obsessed with and subsequently is completely oblivious to her surroundings. The video is all one take, this portrays an unbroken thought. I think the video communicates the message to the audience that everyone has their own problems, that people continue through each day with these issues. Whether it is physical (like the man with no legs on the skateboard) or an issue you can't let go like the woman singing in the video. The video demonstrates how easy it is to lose yourself in your own problems and ignore the world around you. The scenery in the video shows that its is cearly a poor area. This is also shown by the tramps on the side of the road, it represents the people who have nothing and draws the audiences attention to less fortunate people in the world.

Michael Jackson- Thriller
www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_MuUcxHATo&ob=av2e
The song Thriller by Michael Jackson was first released in 1984. Though the song was hugely popular, the music video was one of the main reasons it did so well. No one had ever done a video like it before. It is set out to seem like a horror movie, and at the time of its release was considered by some to be frightening. In the video Michael Jackson leads a dance rountine in which his backing dancers are all zombies. This video is very memorable to its audience as there have never been any other videos like it before or since. It was 14 minutes long in total and had a beggining middle and an end more like a film then a typical music video. It had a horror element to match the title of the song Thriller and it had an unusual dance routine. All of these things add up to make it individual and extreamly memorable to its audience.

Johnny Cash- Hurt
www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho
This Video is about Johhny Cash. It shows parts of his life and you are presented with a frail old man who shows sadness and despair for the people he has lost in his life. A picture of his wife hanging in his house gives the impression she has passed and he seems completely alone. The closing of the piano at the end not only signifies the end of the song but also symbolises the end of his life. The impression given to the audience in this video is one of sadness. It shows the audience his pain and loss through the images of his life to now. The way the words of the song tie in with what the video is showing the audience is very important as it tells the story of his life, and allows us to understand. Brittany Spears- ...Baby one more time
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CMzH18IjHA
...Baby one more time by Britney Spears is a video of a school girl who has recently broken up with someone and has now realised it was a mistake. The video is meant to be aimed at her fans, who were all a similar age to Briteny Spears at the time of this songs realse. The target audience would all have been school students and would want to emulate Britney. She represents school girls as sassy and sexy. Some people in the older audience felt this was wrong, but the impact on schoolgirls was huge and put the video in the top few most memorable videos of all time.

Introduction

In my second year of Media Studies I will be creating a music video. I will be furthing my skills from year one -creating a music magazine- and using my knowledge of the music industry to create a video. I will again be writing a blog to document my ideas, changes and progress throughout the coursework.
