Exploring music videos

Massive Attack- Unfinished Sympathy
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWmrfgj0MZI&ob=av3e
The narrative of this video is a woman who has a thought playing on her mind, something she is obsessed with and subsequently is completely oblivious to her surroundings. The video is all one take, this portrays an unbroken thought. I think the video communicates the message to the audience that everyone has their own problems, that people continue through each day with these issues. Whether it is physical (like the man with no legs on the skateboard) or an issue you can't let go like the woman singing in the video. The video demonstrates how easy it is to lose yourself in your own problems and ignore the world around you. The scenery in the video shows that its is cearly a poor area. This is also shown by the tramps on the side of the road, it represents the people who have nothing and draws the audiences attention to less fortunate people in the world.

Michael Jackson- Thriller

The song Thriller by Michael Jackson was first released in 1984. Though the song was hugely popular, the music video was one of the main reasons it did so well. No one had ever done a video like it before. It is set out to seem like a horror movie, and at the time of its release was considered by some to be frightening. In the video Michael Jackson leads a dance rountine in which his backing dancers are all zombies. This video is very memorable to its audience as there have never been any other videos like it before or since. It was 14 minutes long in total and had a beggining middle and an end more like a film then a typical music video. It had a horror element to match the title of the song Thriller and it had an unusual dance routine. All of these things add up to make it individual and extreamly memorable to its audience.

Johnny Cash- Hurt
www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho
This Video is about Johhny Cash. It shows parts of his life and you are presented with a frail old man who shows sadness and despair for the people he has lost in his life. A picture of his wife hanging in his house gives the impression she has passed and he seems completely alone. The closing of the piano at the end not only signifies the end of the song but also symbolises the end of his life. The impression given to the audience in this video is one of sadness. It shows the audience his pain and loss through the images of his life to now. The way the words of the song tie in with what the video is showing the audience is very important as it tells the story of his life, and allows us to understand. Brittany Spears- ...Baby one more time
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CMzH18IjHA
...Baby one more time by Britney Spears is a video of a school girl who has recently broken up with someone and has now realised it was a mistake. The video is meant to be aimed at her fans, who were all a similar age to Briteny Spears at the time of this songs realse. The target audience would all have been school students and would want to emulate Britney. She represents school girls as sassy and sexy. Some people in the older audience felt this was wrong, but the impact on schoolgirls was huge and put the video in the top few most memorable videos of all time.
